Norway abolished coronations in 1908, but a religious consecration like those held for previous monarchs remains possible. King Harald’s own consecration took place months after his succession in Nidaros Cathedral, followed by a procession and reception. A state funeral for King Harald is scheduled for Sept. 9. Many royals attended a memorial at Asker Church on Aug. 30, where Mette-Marit was also absent. Harald died on Aug. 28 at age 89 after hospitalization in mid-August; he had said he would not abdicate, citing his lifelong oath to the Storting.

A public apology revisited

Recent months also saw renewed attention on Queen Mette-Marit's past contact with Jeffrey Epstein. U.S. Justice Department documents detailed email exchanges from 2011–2014 and a 2013 stay at his home. The queen apologized publicly, calling her past judgment poor and saying she had been manipulated and deceived.
