On Aug. 15 the principality announced it is replacing male-preference primogeniture with absolute primogeniture: the first-born child, regardless of sex, will be heir. The update was declared during national day celebrations.
The change won’t alter the current head of state, Prince Hans-Adam II, 81. His eldest son, Hereditary Prince Alois, has acted as regent since Aug. 15, 2004. The amendment applies to future descendants of Alois and Princess Sophie.
Alois and Sophie’s children are Prince Joseph Wenzel (31), Princess Marie Caroline (29), Prince Georg Antonius (27) and Prince Nikolaus Sebastian (25). Alois said the law shift aims to ensure the most prepared person leads the principality and the princely house.
