Queen Sonja was hospitalized in May after a heart failure diagnosis and had a pacemaker installed in January 2025 following atrial fibrillation during a ski trip. Crown Princess Mette-Marit underwent a lung transplant in June after a 2018 diagnosis of chronic pulmonary fibrosis; doctors at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet called the operation successful and she was pictured at home in July.

The king’s stance

King Harald, who became monarch in January 1991 at age 53 and has reigned 35 years, has said he does not plan to abdicate, citing the oath he made to the Storting.
