What she experienced

Jackson called herself “one of the lucky ones,” noting she did not endure physical or sexual abuse but did face psychological, emotional and spiritual mistreatment. She accused staff of pitting clients against each other, undermining trust with roommates and therapists, and contacting families to discredit patients. She also described being medicated and feeling “zombie-d out,” saying you learn to “play the game” if you want to leave.

Looking back and moving forward

Jackson previously spoke to Rolling Stone in 2017 about a suicide attempt tied to self-hatred and low self-esteem and said time at a Utah therapeutic school had helped her then. Her new album, Happiest Day of My Life, is due Aug. 21, following her 2020 debut, Wilted. If you need help, call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org.
