After moving from Kensington Palace to Adelaide Cottage in 2022, William and Kate opted for a fresh start following difficult years that included the 2022 death of Queen Elizabeth and cancer diagnoses in the family. Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith told PEOPLE in December 2025 that Adelaide Cottage had become "a place of pain, suffering and sadness," making a new home understandable.
Forest Lodge sits inside Windsor Great Park, about four miles from Adelaide Cottage. Once called Holly Grove and bought by the Crown Estate in 1829, the Grade II–listed Georgian-style property features eight bedrooms, a ballroom, a pond, a tennis court, six chimneys and nine bay windows. The home had major renovations in 2001 and was granted permission for minor alterations in early 2025, per the BBC.
