Officials and president respond

Interior Department communications director Katie Martin said this summer has seen a significant increase in vandalism to the National Mall. President Trump ordered a crackdown, blamed vandals for damage to the reflecting pool — saying there were large slits he attributed to a box cutter or knife — and noted at least five arrests have been made so far.
