Just one day after advancing to an August runoff, Lahmeyer announced he would suspend his campaign "after prayerful consideration with my wife, Kendra, and my team." He apologized to Trump, his family, donors and congregation, said he was "done with politics" and is taking a sabbatical from preaching. President Trump quickly withdrew his endorsement and shifted support to Lahmeyer’s opponent. Lahmeyer said the decision may have spared his life and family and vowed to try to make amends.
