Mette-Marit was diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018 and was recently placed on a transplant waiting list. She had been seen using a nasal cannula in public and visited Rikshospitalet with Crown Prince Haakon and their daughter Princess Ingrid Alexandra the day before the wait-list confirmation.
The announcement came just days after her son Marius Borg Høiby, 29, was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of two counts of rape and other offenses. Oslo District Court issued the verdict on June 15 and imposed a two-year restraining order; an appeal court had denied his request for release from custody while his mother’s health declined.
