Update on Crown Princess Mette-Marit's condition

The palace has said Crown Princess Mette-Marit's health has deteriorated. Diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, the 52-year-old has been described by the Crown Prince as seriously ill and recently worse. She has been seen using a nasal cannula for oxygen. Haakon said decisions about a possible lung transplant are for her medical team to make.

Family pressures and schedule changes

Because of the health situation, the Crown Prince shortened an official trip to Japan; the palace announced the change on May 29. The royal family is also managing other health concerns: Queen Sonja was hospitalized on May 27 for atrial fibrillation and heart failure and is on sick leave to adjust medication after a pacemaker was installed in January 2025. King Harald has faced several health issues in recent years, including surgeries and hospital stays.
