The 20-Minute Push

In an excerpt from her memoir "View from the East Wing" (due June 2), Jill recalls the July 21, 2024 call when President Biden told Harris he was ending his campaign. Harris allegedly reacted, "Oh my God, Joe. Are you sure?" and quickly pressed for a public endorsement, saying "I want it sooner" and even asking, "Could you do it soon? Say, in 20 minutes?" Joe told her he'd call back "when I figure this out." Jill writes Harris' tone reminded her of "a courtroom prosecutor," and that she ultimately walked out as the conversation continued. Joe endorsed Harris roughly 30 minutes after announcing he was dropping out, a move that cleared the Democratic field.
