Royal biographers and palace sources say the cottage was in poor condition when it was gifted by Queen Elizabeth for the couple’s 2018 wedding. About $3 million was spent updating heating, gas, water and electrical systems and converting five dorm-style units into a five-bedroom home. Officials say fixtures and furnishings were privately paid for by the Sussexes; Harry later reimbursed the Sovereign Grant for the refurbishment.
The couple lived at Frogmore from April 2019 until their move to the U.S. in March 2020, and used it during 2022 visits. They were asked to vacate in 2023 and officially left in June that year. Sources now say the cottage has sat largely unused while options are considered.
