Now a judge on the show, the 43-year-old Underwood — who won American Idol's fourth season in 2005 — later shared an Instagram recap, captioning her photos, "Living my best rockstar life! #AmericanIdol🤘🏻."

A long love affair with rock

The finale adds to a streak of rock moments for Underwood: last April she performed with Papa Roach at the MGM Grand Arena, singing "Leave a Light on (Talk Away the Dark)" and joining them on "Last Resort" for its 25th anniversary. She has also shared stages with Joan Jett and collaborated with Guns N' Roses at festivals and stadium dates, calling some of those experiences "a lifelong dream come true."
