O’Hara’s bond with Short goes back to their SCTV days in the early 1980s. The couple’s story began even earlier: Short and Dolman met during a 1972 Toronto production of Godspell, where Dolman was an understudy for Gilda Radner, who herself died of ovarian cancer in 1989 at 42.
Friends and colleagues remember Dolman’s devotion and sense of humor — Steve Martin and Andrea Martin have both reflected on her support for Short. The documentary, streaming now on Netflix, is also dedicated to Short and O’Hara’s daughter Katherine, who died by suicide at 46 in February. O’Hara emphasized how Short looked for laughter even in hard times, underscoring the healing power of humor in relationships.
