A fire caused extensive damage in the morning and kept the region on edge. No one was injured, but a massive column of smoke and a large-scale deployment of the fire brigade shook the research facility. Read on to find out the full story!

The alarm was raised around 6:30 AM: Numerous emergency services were deployed, with the fire department citing it as one of the larger operations in recent years. In total, around 160 forces from Darmstadt, neighboring districts, and several industrial fire brigades were on-site. Employees were evacuated by the factory security.

Fire Ignited During System Startup

A spokesperson for the center reported that a short circuit in the high voltage supply while preparing to start up the particle accelerator triggered the fire. On the premises, a new facility is being built, with billions being invested into it.
