Fatal Avalanche Drags Winter Sports Star to Death
Around 12:15 p.m., a disastrous accident occurred on the east side of Hockuchriz at an altitude of approximately 2400 meters. Kestenholz was traveling with a companion when, for reasons yet unclear, an avalanche was triggered. The snow masses swept the 50-year-old away, burying him. His companion, unharmed, immediately raised the alarm. Rescue teams feverishly searched for the extreme sportsman. Kestenholz was eventually found and flown by helicopter to the hospital in Visp, later transferred to Sion - but all help came too late. He succumbed to his severe injuries.
