Deadly Avalanche Claims Life of Winter Sports Star
Around 12.15 p.m. on the east side of Hockuchriz at an altitude of approximately 2400 meters, the fatal accident occurred. Kestenholz was traveling with a companion when, for reasons yet to be determined, an avalanche was triggered. The mass of snow swept the 50-year-old away and buried him. His companion, who escaped unharmed, immediately raised the alarm. Rescue teams feverishly searched for the extreme sportsman. Kestenholz was eventually found and airlifted to Visp hospital, later transferred to Sion - but all help arrived too late. He succumbed to his severe injuries.
