When Thomas Gottschalk publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer, the nation held its breath for a moment. The 75-year-old, who had been a guarantee of good humor for decades, was suddenly battling one of the rarest and most aggressive types of tumor: the epithelioid angiosarcoma.
Gottschalk's tumor belongs to the family of angiosarcomas - types of cancer that arise where they are least expected: in the cells that line our blood and lymph vessels. These cells go out of control due to changes in DNA, begin to divide much too quickly, and displace healthy tissue. Such sarcomas are particularly common on the scalp and in the face – but in extremely rare cases, they can also occur in organs such as the liver, heart, or bladder.
