The songwriter and Grammy winner has tragically died in a plane crash at the age of 57. Alongside him, his wife Melody Carole (59) and their daughter Meryl Maxwell Wilson (28) also passed away. Grammy Winner Killed in Plane Crash
According to US media, including FOX 17 and News Channel 5, Brett James was one of three passengers in a small airplane that crashed on Thursday, September 18, 2025. Tragically, there were no survivors. The news of his death was confirmed by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). In an emotional Instagram post, the organization wrote: "Brett, your ASCAP family misses you dearly. Thank you for your unforgettable music.” Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that alongside Brett James, his wife Melody Carole and their daughter Meryl Maxwell Wilson were also on board the plane.
